DIY Projects
I plan on doing a lot of decor things myself - here's where I tell you all about it! I'm going to put them in here as I finish them... I've got a lot in progress right now!
Flower Girl Pomanders
I am so excited about these! I have my cousin as a flower girl and my church won't let her toss petals... boo! She asked if she could still toss petals at some point, and I said of course! Probably during pictures - that would be super cute! Anyway, since she can't toss petals, I decided that pomanders would be super cute. Thus... this came about! I think it is sooo cute!
Tissue Paper Pomanders
I'm so happy so far with how these are turning out! I've got 2 made so far, and they really haven't taken me long. Somewhere around 30-60 minutes each. This is the tutorial I used to make these.
Mr. and Mrs. Sign
I got the wood plaque from Hobby Lobby and painted the entire thing white. I used this tutorial to stencil the letters on. Then I painted away! I'm not the best painter, so it didn't turn out as neat as I had hoped, but it looks pretty good! We can use it as home decor after the wedding, too! (ps, not the greatest picture. I took it on my ipod and the light was horrible.) I added the yellow flourishes on the side. My mom got a stamp in that same design and we're going to use it on stationary and stuff.
Centerpieces (some of them)
I decided I want 3 different types of centerpieces, since we're going to have so many tables. There are going to be tall, short, and "non-floral". We're definitely going to DIY the non-floral variety, which I did a mock-up of recently, and is pictured. It's 3 tall vases (I think they're 8 or 9 inches) with glass beads in the bottom and a submerged flower (these are cream roses) and a floating candle. Then 2 votive candles in between. I'm really happy with how they turned out. My mom thinks we can DIY the tall centerpieces, but I'm going to get quotes from a florist to see if it's worth our time/really cheaper like she thinks it will be. The short ones are definitely going to be done by a florist. I don't need to worry about 3 different types of centerpieces for 20+ tables the night before/morning of my wedding!
Monogrammed Aisle Runner
I feel a bit like this is my pet project! It's the first project I started working on, and I only just finished it! I did a couple "rough drafts" to practice first. The first one I did was horrendous! I learned that mechanical pencils do not make nice lines on this type of aisle runner (like the tutorial suggested). I then tried a pen because that's what I had on hand... good thing it was just a practice draft! The paint did NOT cover the pen lines! Then I got white charcoal pencils and tried again - worked like a charm! The lines were just enough that I could see them, but were easily covered by the paint! I'm so happy with the results of this practice round, and the final draft looks great! (except for one spot where my paint-filled brush touched the runner - grr!! oh well) I placed it somewhere between 40 and 50 feet back and it is faced so that you can read it from the front of the church. Since it's going to be rolled out before I walk down, I figure this way, guests can see it clearly as they walk out. I was debating between this and having it face the other way for pictures. This was the tutorial I used.
Cake Table Sign
It's not really cake-specific, but I made it with the idea that I'd probably put it there. I was inspired by a (very) similar sign I saw on Etsy (I'll find the link later!) but didn't want to spend the money on it. I just did this with acrylic paints on a canvas from Hobby Lobby (with a coupon! yay!) I think it turned out great! I'm deciding still if I want to add anything to it. We'll see!
Cake Plates (cheesecake!!)
So, when I decided that cheesecake was definitely what I wanted to do, I figured I'll need plates and/or cake stands for them, since there will be a lot! I plan on serving the cake after the first dance because I'm going to invite most of my co-workers to the dance only and will serve them cake too. I found the milk glass plates (left) on Craigslist and thought they'd be great! Only problem when I got them was that they weren't round, more oval. Not sure if it'll work with 9" cheesecakes. They're about 10" at the widest part and I haven't measured yet at the narrow part. If they won't work, they came with some adorable teacups that match and I can use them for parties and such.
The blue and gray plates I got at Goodwill. There were 9 of them and they were half off that day! So I only paid about $1.50 each! Candlesticks for the bases will be sort of mismatched and of varying heights. I wasn't sure how well I liked the designs on these plates because they were blue instead of yellow or green, which are my colors, but I think they will work and be cute anyway! I can put other yellow and/or green things on the table to make it match my scheme!
My aunt says she knows a way to make the plates stick to the candlesticks without it being permanent so we can use them for other things after and/or sell the pieces. I'll have to do this project with her, I guess! :)
Below are some other pictures of the plates.
